A group of experts, under the auspices of National Advocates for Health (NA4H), has demanded prudent and transparent accountability of national health fund from the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to the tune of NGN166 billion, allocated between the years 2018 and 2021.

The chairman of the National Advocates for Health, Hon. Muhammad Usman made the call in a jingle posted on YouTube and made available to ElombahNews.

The basic healthcare provision fund was created by the National Health Act to improve the quality of healthcare services and make it more available, affordable and accessible

According to the Secretary to the National Advocates for Health, Dr. Laz Ude Eze, so far, the federal government has approved over NGN166 billion for spending since 2018 as follows:

  • NGN55 billion in 2018,
  • NGN51 billion in 2019,
  • NGN25 billion in 2020, and,
  • NGN35 billion in 2021.

The question posed by the group then is: “How have ordinary Nigerians benefitted from all these monies?”

The Health Advocates, therefore, called on President Buhari, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Finance, the thirty-six State Governors, the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly, to ensure prudent and transparent spending of these monies to improve the health of Nigerian people.

Dr. Eze noted that the members of the National Advocates for Health have been leading advocacy for a sustainable health financing and improved quality of health care in Nigeria and are action land mentors to the younger generation.

Other signatories to the jingle include the Grand Patron of the National Advocates for Health, Prof. Oladapo Ladipo, the founder of the International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH), Chief (Mrs.) Moji Makanjuola and the founder of the Stand With A Girl (SWAG), Mrs. Margaret Bolaji-Adegbola.
