The former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, has expressed concerns over the inability of election observers to recruit volunteers ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Prof. Odinkalu made the disclosure on his Twitter handle on Friday.
According to him, the inability of the election observers to recruit volunteers was as a result of violence and insecurity bedeviling the country.
Odinkalu tweeted:
“I am getting word from several local #ElectionObserver groups in #NigeriaDecides2023, that they are having problems recruiting volunteers. Citing violence & insecurity, many ppl are reportedly reluctant to volunteer for elections observation. Has anyone picked this up?

In the recent past, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come under attack as several of its facilities were attacked by hoodlums.
On more than one occasion, the edifice was razed to the ground by assailants.
The latest attack suffered by INEC was in Imo State where hoodlums vandalised its office in Isu Local Government Area, LGA, of the state.
Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee disclosed this in statement in Abuja.
Mr Okoye said that the attack was the fourth in the state, after that of Orlu and Oru West LGA, as well as the State Headquarters in Owerri.
He said that the state INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Sylvia Agu, reported the attack in the early hours of Tuesday, adding that eight windows were smashed and burglary proofs removed. Read more.
