Senate President Ahmad Lawan says educating the girl-child is better than women empowerment programmes.

He spoke on Thursday at a quiz competition for secondary schools across the six geo-political zones at the National Assembly, Abuja.

Top Faith International Secondary School, Mkpatak, Akwa Ibom state, won the competition organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).

Lawan said, “If you want to empower women, you don’t do that only through organising city women and say they must have this and that, go back to the basis by giving the girl child quality education.

“Once they’re educated, they don’t have to beg anybody, saying give us this percentage or that of whatever position.

“Eucation of the girl-child is very important for any society or country that wants to be genuinely developed and I’m very happy that girls are well represented among the competing schools here today.”

Director-General NILDS, Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, said the competition was part of the institute’s efforts to address the misunderstanding.

Model Secondary School, Akure, Ondo State, came second in the competition; while Global kids Academy, Sokoto State emerged came third.
