PVC Initiative for Good Governance in Diaspora (PIGGD), has called on ECOWAS to rise to the occasion of saving Senegal from sliding into chaos.

The group in a statement by its convener, Mr Wisdom Opara, urged the regional bloc to reign on President Macky Sall of Senegal to avoid the chaotic path he is leading the country into.

“The President of ECOWAS should rise to this occasion, reign on President Macky Sall to avoid the chaotic path he is leading Senegal into – a once peaceful country is now facing violence that could tear the country apart. ECOWAS must avoid further destabilization of Africa.

“Sall’s dispositions – leading to postponement of elections is against ECOWAS charter and African charter on elections. Technically stopping constitutional election is invite to anarchy. Human rights are trampled upon and protesting Senegalese are mishandled. Macky Sall cannot be above the charters signed by Senegal. A proactive action should be taken to avoid political instability and violence in Senegal.n.

“With Niger, the role of ECOWAS in bringing democratic stability in West Africa was critically assessed, casting doubt on it’s ability to sustain democracy across west african States. Senegal presents a massive test for the faltering bloc which had allowed Burkina Faso, Mali and lately Niger to undermine democratic values.”

Opara also accused the Senegalese President of undermining democratic values in the region, adding that there is already a political instability and protests across the country, which is creating artificial chaos following his unholy effort to stick to power.

“Macky Sall of Senegal is on the path of undermining democratic values, he must be cautioned and debriefed on maintaining democratic institution that brought him into power. ECOWAS must not fold hands and watch the bastardization of democracy in Senegal.

“PIGGD is disappointed with the President of Senegal who has allowed his political ambition to becloud his sense of judgement. There is already a political instability and protests across the country, creating artificial chaos due to his unholy effort to cling onto power. Whatsoever that can bring peace is not costly.

It also called on President Sall to learn from the former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan who sacrificed his political ambition for the sake of peace.

“President Macky Sall should learn from Goodluck Jonathan who sacrificed his political ambition for the sake of peace. Undermining democratic values in Senegal would lead to violence and destabilization of government and governance.

“ECOWAS must spell it out in clear terms that President Macky Sall shall be held responsible for death of any citizen of Senegal or the chaos brewing. The gains of democracy Senegal has made over the years cannot be sacrificed on the altar of political ambition.

“PIGGD also calls on Amnesty International and UN to keenly monitor through ECOWAS the brewing instability caused by Macky Sall’s sheered greed to hold onto power instead of allow election to hold in accordance with the constitution of the country.

“Africa has faced too many challenges and facing more which are as a result of blatant neglect of constitutional order will be consuming. Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger are all grappling with constitutional negligence, Senegal is one too many.

“Suspending the constitution is a potential path to dictatorship and other African countries are watching, the military is watching and might take advantage of the instability to follow suit.

“Much is on the shoulder of ECOWAS and the reputation of the bloc is once more being tested and should ECOWAS fail to wade in and reign on President Macky, it would be a dangerous record and further devalue the bloc.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubub must impact his charismatic leadership on ECOWAS, to ensure the bloc continue to sustain democratic values across the board.”
