Coalition trains schools c’ttee on project monitoring, advocacy

The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) has restated its commitment towards strengthening School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) in Kaduna State.
Mr. Adeleke Damian-Mary, CSACEFA Programme Officer, made this known on Thursday in Kaduna at a training programme for SBMCs.
The CSACEFA official said the programme was aimed at boosting the capacity of SBMC officials in Jaba, Kaduna North Local Government Area to monitor school projects.
He said that the participants were trained in project monitoring, budget tracking, advocacy and community mobilisation.
According to him, the gesture is to improve the effectiveness of the SBMCs in school monitoring.
“We have in the past three years supported the fight against corruption by promoting budget tracking and project monitoring at the grassroots,” he said,
Damian-Mary further stated that the training, supported by the MacArthur Foundation, was aimed at tackling corruption in the implementation of community school projects.
“This move is in line with the anti-corruption campaign of the Federal Government. We want to enable them to effectively monitor projects, conduct budget tracking, advocacy and community mobilisation,” he said.
Also speaking, Mrs. Esther Jibji, representative of the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board described the SBMCs as “voluntary but important to the school system”.

“They are a bridge between schools and the communities; they contribute to school development planning and decision making for improved learning.
“They monitor teachers’ attendance, advise the school authority on teachers’ behaviour and commitment to work, create awareness, conduct advocacy, and monitor projects,” she said.
Dr Mohammed Shehu, a guest lecturer, said that the training would prepare the SBMC members to perform more effectively.
He urged the participants to use the knowledge gained during the exercise in undertaking their responsibilities.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mr. Andrew Ma’aji, SBMC Chairman, Universal Basic Education, Kurmin Rumi, Jaba, described the training as intensive and enriching.
“I have gained a lot from this engagement; it has equipped us to perform better. We ask other stakeholders to support us with this kind of programmes,” he said. (NAN)
