BREAKING: S’Court sacks Rivers local govts’ chairmen, councillors
The Supreme Court on Friday canceled the local government elections held in Rivers State on October 5, 2024, citing legal violations.
A five-member panel, in a unanimous decision ruled that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) failed to meet key legal requirements before organizing the election.
While delivering the lead judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur sided with the All Progressives Congress (APC), which argued that critical procedures were not followed.
Tukur noted the absence of proof that voter registration continued up to 90 days before the election, and that the necessary public notices were issued in accordance with electoral laws.
The apex court’s ruling thereby voided the election results that produced chairmen and councillors in the state.
