The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has dismissed Professor Richard Akindele for requesting sex from a female student for  better grades.

OAU Vice Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, disclosed this on Wednesday to journalists after the Council meeting in Ile Ife, Osun State.

He said that the Council reached the conclusion after its findings, in addition to the errant professor’s admission.

The Council was able to establish that Professor Akindele had an inappropriate relationship with one of his students, Miss Monica Osagie.

The Council also certified that he offered to change Osagie’s 33 per cent result to a pass mark, in consideration for sexual favours.

According to the vice chancellor, this was established in an audio recording that went viral in early April which Akindele also admitted to.

ElombahNews had reported about a private telephone conversation between one Richard Akindele, a professor of management and accounting at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and a female undergraduate that was leaked.

OAU administration later commenced investigation into the alleged sex-for-mark scandal involving the Professor and the female student.

In the meantime, the institution had suspended the professor while investigation lasted.

Professor Ogunbodede further informed journalists that from the evidence, Miss Osagie had no idea that she scored 45 per cent pass mark as claimed by the erring professor.

The student later found out she did not fail the course after the advances.

He noted that Professor Akindele operated in a position of power and authority over Miss Osagie and as such sexually harassed her.

He pointed out that Professor Akindele was found culpable for all allegations of misconduct levelled against him with all the evidence at the Council’s disposal.

The findings led to his dismissal from the services of the university which is hoped to serve as a deterrent to others.

Finally, he assured that the university has taken steps to eliminate sexual harassment in the OAU community.
