The catholic faithful in Anambra State yesterday joined the rest across Nigeria to protest the spate of killings across the country by Fulani herdsmen, with a warning that enough is enough.

The Catholic Bishop of Awka, Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor while leading the peaceful protesters round the streets of Awka accused the Federal Government of complicity in the killings, occasioning the levity in treating the suspects.

The Catholic Bishop of Awka, Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor represented by the Diocesan Chancellor led the peaceful protesters who converged at Ekwueme Square from where they trekked 9 miles, before finally assembling at the Saint Patrick Cathedral Awka where they offered prayers for the repose of the departed and for God to intervene.

He noted that the occasion was one of such events taking place simultaneously across the Catholic Churches in Nigeria, stressing that the occasion coincided with the burial rites of two Catholic Priests fixed same day.

Bishop Ezeokafor stated that the Catholic faithful were staging the protest because the Federal Government appears to have abdicated from their constitutional role of protecting the lives and property of its citizens, some of whom have been killed by Fulani Herdsmen.

The peaceful protest also coincided with two Catholic priests and 17 other worshippers who were slaughtered by herdsmen in Benue three weeks ago.

In Awka, the State capital, congregations including the Reverend fathers and Rev. Sisters as well as the Laity from different churches marched the streets of Awka to register their grievances.

The protesters carried placards with such inscriptions as:

  • ”Enough Is Enough”,
  • “Stop the Killings, We Want Freedom of Worship”,
  • “Bloodshed Stop Killing Us”,
  • “We Say No To Killings”,
  • “Touch Not Me Anointed”,
  • “God Is The Creator of Life, No Human Has The Right To Take It Away”,
  • “Thou Shall Not Kill”,
  • “Killings Should Stop” and,
  • “ Life Is Sacred, Life Is Precious”.
