The Benue State government has confirmed that men of the Nigerian Army attacked Naka community in Gwer LGA of the state and set over 20 houses ablaze, destroying properties worth tens of millions of Naira.

The state government gave the confirmation in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Titus Zam.

Speaking, Mr. Zam said that the attack was a reprisal by men of the Nigerian Army after one of their own was killed and buried in a shallow grave by “some restive youths”.

He said that the action of the youths led to the unfortunate death of the soldier who was on official assignment in the area.

He, therefore, sympathised with the Nigerian Army and appealed to the military to restrain from further possible reprisal attacks that could lead to destruction of lives and properties.

He reminded the Army that two wrongs does not make a right.

He assured the military that the state government will ensure that justice would be done on both sides and prayed for the repose of the fallen soldier.

The attack by the youths followed an attack a few days ago when armed herdsmen in military uniforms attacked a Benue community and killed several persons.

ElombahNews had earlier reported how some youths in Naka attacked troops who were on a peacekeeping mission in the area, killing a personnel of the Nigerian Army in the course.

The action, thereby, triggered reprisals from the army, according to the report.

Reacting to the incident by the irate youths, some Benue groups have condemned the youths’ action in strong terms, tagging it as barbaric, wicked and malicious.

Also described the unfortunate incident as highly regrettable and condemnable.
