The Associated Press has confirmed it fired a journalist who fabricated a false report with unconfirmed sources about a Russian missile hitting Poland on November 15, according to the Washington Post.

35-year-old James Laporte published an article after the explosion in Przewodów, which cited the data of an anonymous “representative of American intelligence” and quickly spread around the world threatening to spark an even greater escalation in Europe.

The AP later replaced the article, noting that the source was mistaken and the rocket was Ukrainian, which was confirmed by both Polish and American authorities.
