The Borno State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi has, on Tuesday, raised alarm that politicians in the state are recruiting armed thugs.

Going down memory lane, he recalled that the Boko Haram terrorists group had their beginnings in a similar fashion.

The then state governor, Senator Ali Modu-Sherriff has similarly recruited armed thugs which later metamorphosed into Boko Haram.

Mr Abdullahi, told newsmen in Maiduguri that the command had noticed an influx of such thugs at campaign grounds.

Decrying the recruitment of armed thugs for political campaigns, he said that the thugs were being used by politicians to intimidate opponents at rallies.

He stated:

“Such actions by this politicians could mar the fragile peace recorded.

“The insurgents can equally disguise among them to perpetrate unsuspected attacks.”

He, therefore, warned politicians of the dangers of the “nefarious activities”.

He stated that the activities are contrary to Section 227 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and Sections 94 and 95 of the Electoral Act.
