Government and Al-Shabaab officials have confirmed an attack involving suicide car bombs and heavy gunfights by the militant faction on a military base in Somalia’s central Galgaduud region.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Abdullahi Ali Anod said the Islamist group had “torched” a telecommunications center in the town that remains offline and also claimed government forces killed at least five militants with nine soldiers injured.

Meanwhile an Al-Shabaab spokesperson claimed the group had killed several soldiers as well as stealing weapons and military vehicles from the compound near Qayib, which had only been recaptured by the army last week.
