Akpabio vows to pursue NDDC forensic audit to conclusion

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs of Nigeria  and former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio has vowed to conclude the forensic audit initiated at the Niger Delta Development Commissions (NDDC) against all odds.

Senator Akpabio made the pledge on his Twitter handle on Monday following his interview with ARISE TV yesterday, July 12.

He tweeted:

The Honorable MNDA yesterday in his interview with ARISE TV cleared the air on allegations levied against him and remains resolute to ensure that the forensic audit which brought about the attacks on his character and person will continue and be completed by December 2020.”

In the interview, Akpabio had denied involvement with any contract with the commission.

News had gone round that the former Senate Minority Leader of the 8th Senate secured a five hundred million Naira contract with the NDDC.

Reports also said that the said contract was never executed.

Reacting to the allegation, Akapbio said that “the attacks on his character” were occasioned by the forensic audit which he initiated at the Niger Delta Development Commissions.

He assured, nonetheless, that the audit will continue and be completed by December 2020.

Recalled that the former Acting Managing Director of NDDC Interim Management Committee, Joy Nunieh had revealed how she was pressured by Akpabio to take oat of secrecy.

Nunieh made this known when she appeared before Senate adhoc Committee investigating NDDC.

She accused the minister of pressuring her to take the oath of loyalty, but she resisted

The former Acting Managing Director explained that the aim was to siphon NDDC funds without her being able to resist.

She narrated explained that Akpabio pressured her three times to place her under oath, even taking her to the Villa but she vehemently resisted.
It could be recalled that ElombahNews reported on October 18, 2019, that President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a forensic audit of NDDC operations from 2001 to 2019.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Femi Adesina.

The decision followed persistent criticisms of the operations of the commission.

 

Adesina said Buhari gave the directive after receiving governors of the states that make up the NCDC led by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State.

The President said what was presently on ground in the South-South region did not justify the huge resources that had been made available to the agency.
