The African Union Agenda 2063 Ambassador (Au – Ecosocc) and the President African Youth International Development Foundation (AFYIDEF) Amb Timothy Nwachukwu (LLB) has called on President Buhari to declare Africa Day, May 25th, a National public holiday.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, Amb Timothy Nwachukwu stated thus, “May 25th was earmarked by African Heads of States and governments as “African Liberation Day” to celebrate the independence of African countries from the colonial masters.

“However, in 2002 the Heads of State and Government of African countries replaced the OAU with the African Union (AU), and a vision of “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena” was birthed.

“Today, 25th may is observed as a public holiday in twelve African countries namely Angola, Zambia, Ghana, Mali, Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Chad, Comoros,
Equatorial Guinea, , Liberia and Mauritania.

“Africa day provides an opportunity for all Africans within the continent and in the diaspora to celebrate the socio-economic achievements of the continent and in line with the African Union Theme for the year 2022 “Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security” on the African Continent continues to be in focus”.

He further called on president M. Buhari to declare may 25th, a public holiday in remembrance of the struggles of Pan African leaders towards the attainment of independence for African countries.

He further called on the private sector especially key players in the Agricultural Sector, civil society organisations to synergise with the Nigerian government at all levels towards the achievements of the African Union aspirations of food security and nutrition for the growing Nigerian populace.
