The devastating earthquakes that struck near the Afghanistan city of Herat over the weekend have killed at least 2,445 people, according to a Taliban statement late on Sunday, while injuring “more than 2,000.”

The US Geological Survey said the epicenters were recorded about 35km northwest of Herat, not far from the Iranian border, leaving 1,320 houses damaged or destroyed according to the Ministry of Disasters.

A World Health Organization statement said health facilities and rescue operations were severely overloaded, adding that casualty figures were likely to rise further.
