8 APC members of Benue house of assembly under the supervision of APC Senator George Akume, who stormed Makurdi with policemen from Abuja this morning, has served Governor Ortom impeachment notice.

This followed “an attempted coup in Benue State to impeach Governor Samuel Ortom by lawmakers and hundreds of policemen loyal to the former governor, Akume.

Akume is a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and was the Minority Leader of the Senate from June 2011 to June 2015 as well as former governor of the state.

According to our correspondent, renegade police men colluded with some eight Legislators to execute the coup in Benue State.

The eight lawmakers were reportedly escorted into the State House of Assembly Complex by policemen with the express intention is to impeach Governor Ortom.

The majority 17 others believed to be PDP members were barred by the Police from entering the Complex.

The “coup”, according to our correspondent, was organised by the ruling All Progressives Congress [APC] following Ortom’s defection from the party to the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP].

Reacting to the action, PDP on its Facebook page said that the “actions of the Police is completely unacceptable.”

The party said that the action “shows that the Police is an interested party in the purported impeachment saga.

“It’s also unlawful and highly unconstitutional for 8 out of 30 Assembly members to propose an impeachment against Governor Ortom.”

It, therefore, called on all lovers of Democracy to rise against this unconstitutional act.

“Nigerians will hold President Muhammadu Buhari responsible for any breakdown of law and order resulting from this act of brigandage.

“The President Buhari administration has failed and nothing will stop the people from removing him in 2019,” PDP stated.

Other PDP members have also individually condemned the action.

Taking to his Twitter handle, former Aviation Minister, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode wrote:

“Buhari’s latest show of shame in Benue is condemnable.

“Attempting to impeach Gov. Ortom by brute force and Gestapo tactics is disgraceful.

“Using a tiny handful of crooked lawmakers and hundreds of policemen will lead to anarchy.

“Buhari is playing with fire and he is on his way out!”

PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan wrote:
