Kano State, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that the death toll from a tragic road crash in Kano has risen to 23.

The incident, which occurred on Friday at the Muhammadu Buhari flyover, involved a trailer carrying both goods and passengers.

According to Abdullahi Labaran, spokesperson for the FRSC Kano command, the accident also left 48 people injured. Preliminary investigations attribute the crash to dangerous driving and excessive speeding, which caused the trailer driver to lose control of the vehicle.

“The vehicle involved is a trailer (DAF Model) carrying goods and passengers. The cause of the road traffic crash (RTC) was dangerous driving due to over-speeding, which resulted in the loss of control under the bridge,” Labaran stated in an official release. “The total number of people involved was 71, with 48 injured and 23 fatalities.”

In response to the devastating accident, CC UM Matazu, the sector commander of the FRSC Kano sector command, has deployed an investigative team to conduct a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The aim is to uncover further details and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The sector commander also issued a stern warning to drivers and the general public about the dangers of overloading trailers with goods, animals, and passengers. “Such dangerous practices significantly increase the risk of fatal crashes,” Matazu emphasized.

The FRSC has reiterated its commitment to promoting road safety and reducing road traffic accidents across Nigeria. Authorities have urged drivers to adhere strictly to speed limits and avoid reckless behaviors that endanger lives.

The tragic accident serves as a grim reminder of the critical need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations and greater public awareness about safe driving practices.
