Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last election, has said he will keep contesting for the presidency as long as he is live.

He said this during an interview on the Hausa service of the Voice of America in Abuja.

“Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy,” Atiku

The former Vice President will be 81 during the next presidential election in 2027.

Despite the age factor, Atiku said he would “keep contesting” for the number one seat till his health permits.

While justifying his sudden change of mind, Atiku quoted the former US President Abraham Lincoln who contested seven times before finally winning.

“Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning,” he said.

“However, given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single-handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required,” he stated in reference to a coalition.

“Also, we are going to be behind anybody that will be chosen to represent us in the forthcoming elections.

“I have made it clear in my previous speeches that if our parties are going to merge to agree on a candidate from the south-east, as long as he is qualified, we will allow it,” he added

NewsBand reported that Atiku during an interview with BBC last week, said he will give his total support to the former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi if his party, PDP should zone the presidency to the Southeast.

Although he has been on the ballot as a presidential candidate on three occasions, 2007, 2019, and 2023, it’s unclear what informed the sudden change of mind.
