2019: British Minister Of State For Africa Visits INEC

The British Minister of State for Africa, Ms. Harriet Baldwin, in company of the Deputy High Commissioner Harriet Thompson and Deputy Head of Office for DFID Nigeria John Primrose, visited the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] headquarters in Abuja, on Wednesday, ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Their visit coincides with the visit of the British Prime Minister, Ms. Theresa May, who is currently having an interface with President Muhammadu Buhari as at publication time.
On hand to welcome Ms. Baldwin and her entourage was the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as well as other members of INEC leadership.
During the visit, the British Minister described INEC as Nigeria’s most important institution.
The Commission’s Chair, Prof. Yakubu, on his part, spoke on innovations being put in place to ensure credible 2019 general elections.
Also, on Wednesday, INEC Chairman, Prof. Yakubu and members of the Commission met with members of the National Inter-agency Advisory Committee on Voter Education (NICVEP).
Earlier, INEC Resident Electoral Commission [REC], Hon. Zamfara State Dr. (Mrs) Asmau Sani Maikudi was in company of the Administration Secretary and some Head Of Departments and Head of Units Gender supervised 6 Local Government Areas in respect of the on-going CVR exercise and collection of PVCs.
In a related development, INEC released update on the Continuous Voter Registration.
The update shows that as at 26th August, 2018:
1. Fresh Registration: 13,634,414
2. PVC Collection: 854,362
3. Transfer Requests: 696,643
4. Replacement Requests: 1,067,406
5. Gender analysis of new registrants:
(i) Female: 7,386,583
(ii) Male: 6,247,831
